Women of Piraziz Village

Giresun Felt

Fırat Neziroğlu: From Tradition to the Future with the Anatolian Textile Network

In the village of Piraziz, Giresun, there are approximately 1,000 Karayaka sheep. I learned that their wool, sheared every year, is too coarse, so wool was being imported from New Zealand. The felting process used a blend of 70% soft New Zealand wool and 30% Karayaka wool.

Based on this information, I went to Giresun and worked with the women of Piraziz Village to create felt sheets from pure Karayaka wool. From these felt sheets, we designed and produced shoes and boots.

As a consultant for Wearable Technologies at BiliÅŸim Vadisi, I conducted tests and discovered that wool helps block the negative effects of urban electricity on the human body.

Beyond designing patterns and colors, I am researching the benefits of natural fibers on both nature and people. I continue to design new fabric and felt constructions in the light of science.
